MADISON, N. J., (D-1/14/2015) — U. S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-V) on Friday urged the public to buy more than $1 billion worth of Viagra, the world’s best-selling brand, over the past two years.
Sanders, a Vermont congressman, said the new prescription drug bill could save thousands of lives. But he added that the health-care law’s approval is “an extreme example of an extreme example of the use of the federal government’s power to grant patents to pharmaceutical companies.”

Pfizer also has allowed a handful of generic Viagra tablets to be sold in New Jersey and New York.
Pfizer is the only manufacturer of Viagra in the United States to have approved generic versions of the drug in other countries.
The drugmaker said in a statement this week that the FDA is seeking to “investigate Pfizer’s actions and conduct additional clinical studies to determine whether Pfizer’s actions are appropriate to provide generic versions of the drug to patients in the United States.”
Pfizer has denied any desire to sell the pills and has declined to answer questions about the drugs’ sales in New Jersey, New York and other states.
In March, the drugmaker said that the generic versions of Viagra and Cialis were sold in more than 500 states and the District of Columbia, and that it would be the first time a generic drug sold in Canada has been approved.
The pharmaceutical company has not said how it would make the pills available.
“The drugmaker has done nothing to promote the sale of the brand or to encourage the sale of generic versions of the drug,” Sanders said in a statement.
The new legislation will enable Pfizer to make generics of the drug, which it plans to sell in the United States and Canada, and allow generic drug makers to sell the drugs for consumers.
